Research Worth Doing
The famous Attention Is All You Need Paper was submitted to and accepted at NeurIPS 2017. There were approximately 3200 papers submitted to NeurIPS 2017, of which, approximately 700 (21%) were accepted. Since then, NeurIPS has seen an exponential increase in number of papers submitted. In 2024, there were over 15000 submissions; one year layer, in 2025, there were close to 30000 submissions. Ofcourse, apart from NeurIPS, there are many other machine learning conferences and journals, but we will focus on NeurIPS for now.
On average, we can estimate each machine learning research paper to cost approximately 520 human hours and 1000 GPU hours, or approximately $28000. Some research papers, for example, theoretical papers, would cost more human hours and less GPU hours, others, like large language moddels papers, would cost less human hours and more GPU hours. But overall, I think $28000 is a fair average. Given that estimate, $840000000 has been spent on NeurIPS 2025 submissions. Given that __
